5 Tips To Help Make Cleaning Carpets Easier on Your Back
Of all the parts of your home that suffers all year round, the carpets are arguably the ones that take the most beating. Your back too, suffers for it, given the amount of back breaking work it takes to keep the carpets clean, if only barely.
Fortunately for you, carpet cleaning can be made easier, both on your back and on your wallet. Take a look at these clever and non-toxic carpet cleaning hacks to help make carpet cleaning less of a chore.
1. Remove Stains Using Your Iron
Your iron, for all the good times it has saved you from looking bad wearing wrinkly clothes, actually help you out even more when it comes to your carpets.
The trick here is to vacuum the affected spots to remove all the particles. Then, dampen a towel with a solution made of one part vinegar and three parts water and put it over the spot.
Set the iron to heat on low or medium and heat the towel as it’s placed over the stain. Move slowly and you’ll notice the stain slowly being removed or transferring to the towel. This trick is especially useful for wax stains.
2. Make Your Carpets Smell Good With Essential Oils and Baking Soda
Make your own deodorizer by mixing around 10 to 20 drops of any essential oil of your choice with a 16-ounce box of baking soda. Make sure to mix it up well and store the resulting solution into a glass container. To use, simply shake some of the solution on your carpet and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes before vacuuming it. This should leave your carpets smelling good for quite some time.
3. Cleaning Area Rugs and Shag Carpets Properly
Most vacuums have too much suction for them to clean area rugs and shag carpets without damaging it or causing it to go frizzy. Prevent this from happening by using the hose attachment of your vacuum. While this nearly doubles the cleaning time, it does make sure that you’ll be able to suck deep into the carpet fibers without damaging the area rug or shag carpet in any way.
4. Fluffing Your Carpets Up
Over the years, your carpet will show signs of wear and tear and nothing is more obvious than when it looks like it’s been walked in on by an army. The best way to fluff your carpet back up is to spray stains and hardened areas with the same equal parts vinegar and water solution mentioned earlier. The agent should be able to work its magic in about five minutes and after letting it sit for that long, be sure to blot up the stain. Then, hold a spoon on its side and run it along the carpeting to encourage the carpet fibers to stand back up again. While this doesn’t really help make your carpet look good as new, it does help in making stained and hardened areas look better.
5. Hire a Professional
Last, but definitely not the least, you should never forget to hire a professional.
We can go on to list down all the reasons why hiring professionals is worth the cost, but it all still boils down to how much more experienced and knowledgeable they are when it comes to carpet cleaning than you are. Add to that the fact that they have access to much better equipment and there’s really no reason to hire them. Plus, most carpet manufacturers require carpets be professionally cleaned once every one to two years for warranty purposes and there’s no getting your way around that.
Hire professionals to clean, spot treat and restore your carpets twice a year and your carpets won’t be looking as old as fast.
